What Is a Legal Notice?

A legal notice is a formal written communication, usually sent through a lawyer, informing a person or entity of a legal claim, demand or grievance and of the action required within a stated time. It creates a formal record that the other party was informed — a record that often becomes important if the matter later goes to court.

When Is a Notice Sent?

Notices are common in recovery of money, tenancy disputes, family matters, property disagreements and before the institution of civil suits. In some situations the law requires a notice before filing; in others it is a strategic first step that encourages settlement without litigation.

What a Good Notice Contains

An effective notice identifies the parties, sets out the facts and the legal basis of the claim, states a clear and reasonable demand, and fixes a deadline for compliance. Precise, professional drafting matters: a poorly drafted notice can weaken your position, while a well-drafted one often resolves matters without a court case.

Receiving a Legal Notice

Never ignore a legal notice — deadlines stated in it can have legal consequences. Read it carefully, preserve it with the envelope and receipt, and consult a lawyer promptly to prepare an appropriate reply. A timely, legally sound response can protect your rights and, in many cases, prevent litigation entirely.
